Aqua Sand
Have you tried Aqua Sand? This stuff is SO cool. Seriously amazing. Forget that my kids were impressed, I wanted to play! You can quicly make your ownhydrophobic sand from home! Thismagic sand recipe is perfect for allowing kids to leran and explore while having fun with asummer activity for kids – or really any time of the year! You’ve got to try makingwaterproof sand with toddlers, preschoolers, kindergartners, grade 1, grade 2, grade 3, and elementary age students too! This is such afun kids activity!
Magic Sand
All you need to make our simpleaqua sand recipe are a few common materials:
- colored sand
- disposable plate or container.
- water repellant fabric protector o
- plastic spoon to mix
- container with water and spoon to play
Magic Sand Recipe
To make the waterproof sand recipe, start by pouring a thin layer of colored sand in a disposable plate or container. Spray water repellant fabric protector on the colored sand until the sand becomes moist.
How to make hydrophobic sand
Use a plastic spoon to mix the colored sand. Apply another coat of water repellant fabric protector. Allow it to dry completely. Use the plastic spoon to stir the sand every few hours until completely dry.
Waterproof sand
Once your hydrophobic sand is dry, fill the clear plastic cup with water. Place a spoonful of your DIY hydrophobic sand into the water and observe.

It’s like magic! THe sand stay in the shape it is when it enters the water.
Fun activities
Try to use different methods to put the sand in the water and experiment with what it looks like:
- pour sand in
- put on spoon and lower it
- squirt it from a bottle in a blast
- etc.

The water repellant fabric protector coats the grains of sand and causes them to adhere together underwater. This creates a pocket of air around the sand that keeps it from getting wet.)
