How many points are these Weight Watchers Chocolate Muffins?

We originally made these WW Chocolate Muffins when Freestyle Points were the current program. So, these Chocolate Muffins are only 1.5 Weight Watchers Freestyle Points each.

The programs have changed since then to myWW Smartpoints. These are 2 myWW Smartpoints per muffin (on the myWW Blue Plan, myWW Green Plan, and the myWW Purple Plan).

The points are based on the fact that Chocolate Weight Watchers Muffins recipes makes about 48 mini muffins. If you end up making less, be sure to calculate the points with your WW app or calculator before adding the points to your day.

Chocolate Weight Watchers Muffins FAQ’s

Our WW Muffins recipes have been pinned hundreds of thousands of times. In that time, of course, I’ve gotten a lot of questions about them. So, I figured it was time to put together an FAQ section.

If you have any other questions, be sure to leave it in a comment below and I’ll reply and then update this section.

How well do WW Chocolate Muffins freeze?

These Chocolate Weight Watchers Muffins freeze really well. I’ve personally never had any trouble with them getting any sort of freezer burn.

You will want to wait until they’re completely cooled before putting them in a freezer-safe bag. If you don’t wait, you’ll run the risk of the Chocolate Weight Watchers Muffins sticking together.

You could also line a freezer-safe container with a row of these, top with parchment paper, and then put another row of these chocolate muffins on top. Then, close the container.

That would give you a better chance of these holding shape in the freezer. I know sometimes if I toss soft food in a bag and then toss the bag in the freezer, it has the potential to get squished.

What flavor of yogurt works best?

For these muffins, I prefer to use a 100 calorie vanilla yogurt. I feel like it complements the chocolate cake mix without taking away from it.

I have a lemon version of these and a lemon yogurt works best in that one. Any complementary flavors work best.

Although honestly, there’s no wrong way to make these. So if you want to go with a cherry yogurt and make these more of a chocolate cherry muffin, have at it.

Actually, I might have to make that combination next.

Speaking of the yogurt, this calls for 100 calorie yogurt to keep the recipe Weight Watchers friendly (since that’s how it was originally intended). But if you aren’t on Weight Watchers, you can make this Chocolate Weight Watchers Muffins recipe with a full-fat yogurt. It wouldn’t change the amount of muffins or the amount of rise, at all, but it would change the point value.

And, while we’re on the topic of varying the recipe, Betty noted in the comments that she actually makes this recipe but instead of 1 cup of water, she uses 3/4 cup of coffee and 1/4 cup of water. She said it doesn’t make the chocolate muffins taste like coffee. She did say that it enhances the chocolate flavor.

And I love chocolate, so I’m definitely going to have to try that soon.
If you’re on Weight Watchers, you can make the coffee swap without worrying about points. Coffee is zero points on Weight Watchers. What usually gets coffee drinkers is the sugar, but you’re not adding any sugar to this so you should be fine.

If you do try this, I would go with a mild coffee. I love a strong cup of coffee (that’s all we have in this house), but a strong coffee could potentially add a nutty flavor to these muffins. Which sounds delicious, but might not be what you’re going for.

Can you use sugar free cake mix with Weight Watchers muffins?

You definitely can. A sugar free cake mix won’t change the consistency of the muffins, but it may change the points if you’re on Weight Watchers.

How many points would these be for a regular size muffin?

I’ll be honest. I’ve never made these as full-sized muffins. But, if I had to estimate, the batter will make about 16 full-sized muffins. So that would make each full-sized muffin about 4.5 points.

Double check that with your Weight Watchers app, though, before adding it to your day.
